Salman Khan on 40 years of Sholay: Watched this film in school uniform!
Salman Khan watched Sholay in his school uniform. How cute you’d say. But that’s not all the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor goes on to describe his strongest memories of this cult film that featured Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjed Khan in lead roles. Well, it was also one of the most memorable film’s that the then famous Salim-Javed duo wrote together.
Sr Bachchan as Jai, Garam Dharam as Veeru, the Dream girl as Basanti, Amjad Khan as the dreaded Gabbar and Sanjeev Kumar as Thakur in the Ramesh Sippy-directed movie, released on August 15, 1975. And Salman seemed to recall this popular Hindi film fondly. The actor remembers attending Sholay premiere at Minerva theatre along with brother Arbaaz Khan.
Salman in his trademark style quipped, ”I remember we went to see the premiere of Sholay. Arbaaz and me were in Scindia school, so we were dressed in our school blazers when our father took us there,” Salman went on to add how the film bombed at first and it was only later that it went on to become a cult hit film. He said, “The film surprisingly for two weeks was a huge disaster.”
Being an insider Salman revealed how the makers had planned to tweak the film’s climax after it failed to sizzle at the theatres, Salman said, ”Apparently, they went back to shoot the climax to make Bachchan saab relive in the movie but after two weeks, it just took it to the next level.”
Sholay has some very famous and memorable dialogues ever written in a Hindi films, whether it was Gabbar saying in his trademark style, “Kitne aadmi the?” or then Big B’s sarcastic line, “Tumhara naam kya hai Basanti?” and of course there was Dharmendra’s “Basanti, in kutton ke saamne mat naachna“.
While Salman himself can boast of some catchy phrases he has used on screen, the actor feels that this movie was special. Salman, said, “This is one film where ‘informatory lines’ became hit dialogues.” He also hopes that he will also have movie like Sholay to his credit, which will have super dialogues like Sholay.
