Cops find email threatening Mikhail, UK consulate officials meet Indrani: Updates in Sheena Bora case

Since the accused in the Sheena Bora murder case — Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai — have gone to jail and the unceremonious transfer of Mumbai Police CP Rakesh Maria, the case that maintained its place in headlines for two weeks in a row seems to have lost steam.

While newspapers and television channels are now outraging over mean bans across the country and are distracted by the upcoming Bihar elections, we have not had any updates on the case in the past two days.

If this Hindustan Times report is to be believed, with the Maharashtra government wanting eqaul attention on other cases, there has been no police briefing about the updates in the case.

However, other reports suggest that the police have now managed to find emails that substantiate the claimed of Mikhail Bora who had told the police that he and his sister Sheena had been threatened by Indrani Mukerjea.

The Times of India reports that an email dated 8 March, 2012 sent to Sheena and forwarded to Mikhail shows Indrani telling them that she will disinherit them and stop their monthly payments of Rs 40,000 if they "acted smart".

When Mikhail had been earlier questioned by the police he had also told them that Indrani had made attempts to kill him as well.

While Mikhail did not reply to the mail, Sheena had replied allegedly threatening to expose Indrani in front of Peter. The Times of India quoted a source as saying, "Now what she wanted to expose we don't know. We are assuming that Sheena may have been threatening to tell Peter the truth that Sheena and Mikhail were Indrani's children and her not brother and sister as she told Peter."

Indrani Mukerjea, who is married to former Star CEO Peter Mukerjea, is accused of having murdered her daughter Sheena with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai.

The three have been arrested on charges of murdering Sheena and disposing of the body at Pen forest in Maharashtra's Raigad district in April 2012. According to police, Sheena was murdered on 24 April, 2012.

Shyamvar had told the police during interrogation that he, along with Indrani and Khanna, killed Sheena, burnt her body and dumped the remains in a forest off Pen-Khopoli highway from where police retrieved the samples.

All three accused have been sent to judicial custody till 21 September after two weeks of police custody. Indrani has been lodged in the Byculla Womens' Prison in Mumbai.

Reports suggest that officials from the British Consulate met Indrani in prison to check on her since she had become a UK citizen after she married Peter Mukerjea.

A senior police officer told The Indian Express, "Since she is now a British citizen, officials from the British embassy visited Byculla jail officials to check on her case and the facilities she has been extended. However the jail staff told them to get in touch with the the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to get access to the accused."

In the last fortnight, police have also extensively grilled Indrani's husband Peter Mukerjea, though he is not an accused in the case so far.

Apart from Peter, his son Rahul Mukerjea and Vidhie, daughter of Indrani and Khanna, have been questioned by police. Sheena was allegedly strangulated in a car, and her body was burnt and dumped at a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai.

Police had exhumed remains of the body from Raigad forest and claimed that digital superimposition of the profile of Sheena had matched with the skull.

The prosecution held that the accused used modern toools like email and Internet to plan the murder and impersonated the victim by creating false email.
